Maurice,

Don't know about CMOS vs Bicmos. Paul?

The problem is that it's not just the absolute price of the chip. They could give PowerPCs away and still not be cheaper per box. Taiwanese video card makers have huge economies of scale unmatched by IBM. So do IDE drives that hook to a PC bus. So do memory cards. Change the processor, and you change the bus architecture. Change that and the market for all the bits drops from n-million to n-thousand and the price goes up accordingly.

You know what this just reminded me of? Windows NT. When it was released everyone said, 'Oh, it's processor independent. It's the end of Intel! Why would anyone buy an Intel processor when they could buy a MIPS, or an Alpha?'

What is actually happening, though, is that people buy non-Intel only when they feel that there is no Intel solution powerful enough for their needs. And Intel is pushing *that* barrier steadily higher. So why buy Intel? Because, when you look at the price of the whole machine, it's cheaper!
