If you are sitting on a large paper loss but you don't want to be out of that security for 30 days because you are anticipating some sort of year-end rally or because you think it's a good long term hold, there's another approach that can be taken. Buy more of that security, wait 30 days, then sell the original lot. That way, you capture the capital loss, but would still have the same position at the end of 30 days that you currently have.
