Thanks, Rick, for your comments. You have certainly helped me to understand DSL better. Unfortunately, yes, I'm much more than 3 miles from the CO and I'm on a fairly rinky-dink phone company.

The recent hammering of ping alerts does concern me though. And yes, it has affected the performance of both computers. On one computer I get knocked offline fairly regularly.

I thank the Cybergods regularly for Zonelarm. There are too many computers out there that are unprotected which, in my view, just feeds the worm/virus problem.
