I imagined a larger population. They should have used the strong police presence initially to cordon off the town from bad guys coming into town just for the looting and rioting in hindsight. But that is probably not legal anyway...

Saint Louis County is made up of many small communities, but the whole of St. Louis County is quite a bit larger than the City proper. I don't live that far from Ferguson but around the city of St. Louis, one would not know that anything is going on. All of the rioting and protests appear to be going on in a very confined area. Most of the folks arrested were not from Ferguson. I went for a long bicycle ride in Forest Park today and saw quite a few black folks bar-b-queing and exercising in the park. Some of the local black people that I know have openly opposed the violence and looting and while many have expressed sympathy for Michael Brown and his family, I am not seeing the outrage as shown on TV - a very vocal minority.
