randal: Good post. Also SUNW has licensed the closest thing to a standard of remote display for Windows applications from Citrix (who is going gangbusters). The NC WILL HAPPEN,especially as the InterNet bandwidth increases, because it is much cheaper as you increase the scale of the network.Several have indicated the Cost of Ownerships figures have not included the server in the NC figures, however when you scale to anything near the InterNet the incremental cost of ownership becomes miniscule. In addition, software maintenance and upgrades are maintained at one or a small number of server locations. This reduces the cost of software distribution and quality control immensely (this cost far overshadows the incremental server costs).
