Baoho , agree with most of what you posted re cpu speed increases dependent on memory speed , one thing you overlooked though . The speed increase from 486 to Pentium was achieved using the same 60-70nsec Dram . Why the doubling in speed at same clock speed? Because 486 read 4 bytes from memory in parallel and the Pentium read 8 bytes (64 bit) ,that is also why DEC's Alpha is faster it is 128 bit or 16 bytes at a time . regards
