Ray,

There are people who are afraid of guns, have never touched guns, have no idea what makes one different from another, and take pride in their ignorance and prejudice by proclaiming no one should own guns. On the other hand, they're perfectly happy to reap the benefits of those who paid the blood price for the freedom they enjoy. And at any sign of trouble, they're always the first to demand that others should rush to defend them by force of arms.

"Assault" rifle is an absurd term. Virtually every popular "sporting" rifle on the market today earned its popularity as an "assault" rifle. The only difference is once a particular military issue proved itself in wars, the low quality general issue stuff handed to soldiers is refined and modified to higher standards for sporting purposes. There seems to be a general misconception that "assault" rifles and machine guns are the same thing. They are not. You can go to your local sporting goods store and find every rifle or shotgun or pistol caliber made is available in a "semi" automatic version. All that means is the recoil from one shot loads the next shot, rather than using a lever, a bolt or a pump action to manually load the next round. The simple fact of the matter is in the real world, if you're not a good enough shot to get the job done with the first one, it isn't likely a self loading gun and 50 pounds of ammo strapped to your back is going to improve your ability to hit anything. A good example of that particular fact is Iraq with AK 47s more common than TVs and 25 attacks a day where they don't hit anything with them. I hate to think about what it would be like if Iraq had 25 marksmen with top of the line "sporting" rifles.

<<<they serve no legitimate purpose in civil society>>>

On the contrary. Society is only civil to the degree its citizens are willing and able to protect themselves. If there had been 70 armed citizens on each of the 4 planes on 9/11, there would have been no hijackings. The hijackers succeeded because our government disarmed its citizens.

The military didn't protect those citizens. The police didn't protect those citizens. And those citizens were denied the right to bear arms and as a result were unable to protect themselves. Very uncivilized.
