Low-latency networking has become a major area of focus recently as service providers seek an optimized strategy to meet metro and regional extension requirements and address latency-intolerant applications within the financial market, among others. Electronic trading leads the demand for low-latency connectivity because time is the ultimate factor in success.

fac: this is a vendor-produced article, ergo, caveat emptor... now that I've read it, it's good to see that other applications besides trading are included as reasons for caring about latency... a case in point: when VoIP was beginning to ramp up to large numbers of users in enterprises, it was found that, despite a given network's suitability for traditional data flows (bursty, sporadic and latency-insenstive apps), a great deal of "network tuning" had to be performed (resizing of pipes, re-prioritizations, etc.) in order to bring that same network into shape for handling time-sensitive voice and video conferencing applications ...
