I think Trump is a verbal learner. He strikes me as one of those people who learns from others in a personal way. He avoids books, prefers movies, small chucks of information like Twitter and television sound bites. He thinks he learns a lot from them. Fortunately, since he grew up wealthy and was given millions, he had smart lawyers and people to advise him along the way to avoid complete debt from poor decisions.

That means he needs a conservative in his corner advising him on policy matters. Someone he is willing to listen to, maybe Pence can do that. I suspect prior to the debates he will invite some Admirals to lunch to help get him up to speed on military matters such as the nuclear Triad. He's never going to be a Ted Cruz, who is able to articulate conservative philosophy and align it with policy prescriptions. He can't do that and at the age of 70 is too intellectually lazy to go through the effort.
