O'Donnell's victory was, it seems clear, a rebuke to an out-of-touch Republican establishment in both Delaware and the District of Columbia: "To HELL with them!" Which leads to a question: Can a party whose leadership is so detached from the popular mood really win big in November? What I think we're seeing is the "Internet-ization" of campaigns. Candidates don't need the state or national party apparatus if they can make a big enough splash to get donations on their website. They don't need the party to generate buzz or money. In that game, someone like Palin has more power than Mike Steele ever will.
