For their sake, we had better hope that they will be providing a service like that because if they don't they will be the only service not doing so. This is an industry wide effort and not something AOL even has a say in let alone exclusive rights to use. This service is currently available over the internet however they are only starting to address some of the technical issues relating to quality, delayed transmission and so on.

The issue is still who will provide the physical infrastructure, the server software, the client software and finally the actual online services such as those used to search, select, view and order new products. All online services can provide, voice, video, graphics and that includes the pet shop on the corner or the national sales office of Caterpillar. They will not, do not, and need not go through AOL to provide such a service because they can use standard equipment and software to establish a presence on their end and users can use standard access software on their end.

Microsoft and AT&T can sell subscriptions to their service but allow the end-user to select whatever physical service provider they wish. That can't be said for AOL and it is doomed to fail for that reason alone -- the more fundamental reasons have already been explained.
