First of all, let me commend you for giving us plenty of info to go on. That makes it much easier to try to tell what's going on. Here's a couple of things you might try but it may be simpler to just uninstall and reinstall Word. That very well might take care of the problem. Some vital part may have become corrupt and it could be hard to trace down.

On the dvd/cd issue try right-clicking your my computer icon and going to the hardware/device manager tab and then the device manager button. Expand the dvd/cd drive and right click your drive and choose properties. There can be a yellow or red x or question mark. If that's the case, then go to the troubleshoot button. If nothing appears wrong I'd go back to where you right clicked the drive and uninstall it. Then reboot and it should be reinstalled automatically.
