Computer sound ...

On my system, I have a keyboard command to toggle the speaker on/off: I hold down the (blue) 'Fn' key and press the 'End' key. Your hardware may differ.

Another suggestion. Settings, Control Panel, Multimedia. Check things under CD, Audio, ... for the volume set too low. Control Panel, Sound seems only useful for selecting which sounds to use, not if they are to be heard.
