UK-- Spring for Vodafone 3G
Jan 28, 2004

Vodafone is trialling 3G handsets from Samsung ahead of a spring launch of 3G services. Handsets which are similar to the Samsung Z100 (pictured) are likely to be launched with the Vodafone branding at Cannes.

A Samsung source told Mobile: ‘We have been trialling the Z100 with Vodafone and will launch a similar product with Vodafone.’

Meanwhile, Vodafone is aiming to steal a march on 3 with a practical business service – a high-speed version of its Vodafone Connect service.

The operator has begun a 3G high-speed data trial aimed at business users, which offers data connections as fast as 384Kbps in areas of 3G coverage.

Despite being in operation for nearly a year, 3 has held back from launching business-specific services, preferring to concentrate on consumer products.

A spokeswoman for Vodafone told Mobile that the trial would be used to determine both the pricing and the way the service is to be marketed.

A similar service in Germany, announced last year, is sold under the name of Vodafone Connect UMTS. Vodafone has declined to name the manufacturer of the dual-mode data card (see box), but it is thought to be using a 3G chipset from Qualcomm.

The 3G corporate user trials will initially concentrate on urban areas like London, Birmingham and Manchester. However, smaller business customers will be introduced to the trials at a later date.

Vodafone UK CEO Gavin Darby said: ‘This is the first step along our 3G path, and paves the way for the development of a range of enhanced offerings for businesses.’

almost certainly that's a Qualcomm chipset... while the whole ballgame rides on the smooth usefulness of multimode chips and the success of the current R & D mill.
