Thomas: why do you think there will be a major shift to the bring-your-own
ISP option? I think your fellow bears here would contend that the more
sensible alternative would be for people to sign up with an ISP and be rid of
AOL entirely.

I'm puzzled by your reading of the recent AOL agreements and how that
would suddenly alter the type of access consumers would choose.

If it makes you feel any better, I use the AOL $4.95 a month plan, while
relying on my ISP and the Internet for most everything I want online.
To me this just shows how AOL has improved its service compared with a
year or two ago, because I changed my mind about dropping them and decided
it was a worthwhile backup service. If they can keep people like me, even at
a reduced rate, and continue offering the best service for the masses of newbies,
then I don't see a lot to be worrying about in this regard.
