There's nothing wrong with fighting and struggling for illusory, or especially measurable, gain -- at least in moderation.

I'm really glad you brought up your driving story. Often I have a hard time convincing people of the wisdom of moderation -- they consider it to equate with "boring" or "safe" or suchlike. It really doesn't need to. I think that people should, for instance, do things that are frightening and exciting because they're life-threateningly dangerous. They should simply indulge in such things in moderation. There's no reason why people can't be -- and it could possibly be argued that they should be -- moderately rude, or moderately violent, or moderately lustful, or almost anything they desire to be... at least in moderation.

Yes, I agree with you that there are times when you have to step out of the pack, and when doing so is not a real hardship for others. Of course a V-8 and a stick helps. :&#172)
