Understanding AOL Marketing

Whoa! If that's what advertisers think, aren't you curious as to why would
they go ahead and sign multiyear deals with AOL.

Can anyone reconcile the following two events? Even with my thorough
understanding of AOL semantics, I still don't see the way this makes sense:

From: amazon.com
>Seattle, WA and Dulles, VA -- (July 8, 1997) -- Amazon.com, Inc.
>[Nasdaq:AMZN] and America Online, Inc. [NYSE:AOL] today announced
>a three-year comprehensive promotional agreement under which
>Amazon.com will be the exclusive bookseller on AOL.com and AOL's
>NetFind search engine.

And from www-db.aol.com

>NEW YORK - March 18, 1997 - Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE:BKS), the world's
>largest bookseller, today announced that its online retail site is now live on
>America Online (NYSE:AOL), the world's largest Internet online service.
>Barnes & Noble (Keyword: Barnes and Noble) is the exclusive bookseller
>in AOL's Marketplace.

How does one have two exclusive booksellers at the same time?

Could the 11% drop in the shares of amazon be related to this observation?
