I also, agree with Tom. First stay away from penny stocks and dogs. Charles Shwab is an excellent discount brokerage firm. When starting out with little money it is essential to have a discount brokerage firm, becuase you don't want to spend all your money on commissions.
Also, you can trade on the internet for $29 a trade with Shwab. Another suggestion would be to subscribe to Smart Money Magazine. On the Internet you can subscribe to the New York Times, Barrons, and Investors Business Daily for free. I recomend you look into buying stocks that offer dividend and can be purchased without a broker.
A good buy is Individual (INDV). Place an order for 200 shares at $5.5. By the year end the stock will be in the teens. Pepsico (PEP) is also a good buy and undervalued at current levels. Within the next two years that stock will be back to the $60 level (get dividen reivesting on this one).
