I think it is important to note that until about 3 or 4 months ago, Visigenic's core products were ODBC drivers. I would think that most of their revenues would come from this line of products.

I would also argue that DCOM is gaining momentum. It was recently announced that the DCOM specification is now going to be managed by the the Open Group (OSF-X/Open). OSF is the same organization that brought us DCE. I think that this will do DCOM a lot of good. However, from what I understand, CORBA is a purer distributed object model and one that is cross-platform right now (unlike DCOM).

If there is one thing I have learned it is that good technology is only half (or maybe even a fourth) of the battle. The real issue is how good you are are selling technology. I've been following Visigenics for a while and they seem like a great company from a technology standpoint. They have excellent ODBC drivers and a cross-platform Java based ORB. The question is how effective can they be at selling this stuff to customers and to wall street analysts.

I also have issues as to whether Java is ready for prime-time. I have used a couple Java development tools and have found them all quirky, buggy, and unbelievably slow. I couldn't possibly imagine anyone building a production application totally in Java. It will take a few months (or maybe even longer) for these Java tools to come up to speed. Until this happens I don't see Visigenics selling too many Java Orbs.

Does anyone know anything about their management staff?
