Gore Nominated for President of Harvard University
BOSTON (Reuters) - Members of a committee searching for a new president for Harvard University have nominated Vice President Al Gore (news - web sites) to succeed the retiring president of the prestigious institution, the Boston Globe reported on Tuesday.
The chairman of Harvard's search committee confirmed that four people have nominated Gore to succeed Neil Rudenstine, who plans to step down next summer, the Globe reported.
``He'll go into our pool and be considered seriously,'' Robert Stone, senior fellow of the Harvard Corporation, told the Globe.
But Stone also said Gore, whose future has been the subject of speculation since he lost the U.S. presidential election to Texas Gov. George W. Bush (news - web sites), is an unlikely choice.
``I'd rather doubt he'll get it,'' Stone told the Globe. ``He doesn't have the academic and intellectual standing.''
Gore, a 1969 graduate of Harvard, is among 500 names that have been put forward for Harvard's presidency, the Globe said.
Joseph Nye, dean of Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government, told the Globe the university was most likely to hire a nonpartisan figure for its presidency.
``He's an extremely bright man who has a Harvard degree, and you can't get much better experience,'' Nye told the newspaper. ''But he hasn't been in the academic world.'' |
