Allowances....
You ask me after watching my investing style for years?
This is one area I think we fell down in. We didn't give them. Oh once in a while we tried, but I was too disorganized. We expect them to do certain chores because they are part of the family unit and we all contribute to the functioning of that unit. For extra stuff- car washing, or extra yardwork, we usually paid. Mostly if they needed money, they asked, and I gave.
Then in high school, because they ALWAYS needed money. I gave them gas, lunch, and spending all in one lump sum. School lunches are very expensive here. Ammo got 25.00 a week, CW got 40 because he did all the driving for both him and Ammo. This year Ammo gets 35. But he never asks for it (where CW would wake me up at 12:01 on SUnday morning and inform me it was a new week and where was his money). Ammo saved all his last year and must have a million dollars hidden somewhere. The maid says she comes across 20.00 bills all the time floating around his room.
Both of them are cheap and both have saved a lot of money. CW has more than the average American family in a Waterhouse account; he is dying to start investing. AMmo doesn't care- he just likes knowing it's there.
