In most cases I have been very successful in removing these things with Ad-aware, letting it go ahead and remove things as it sees fit.

Perhaps if you post the ten items that were detected, we can see if they are familiar to anyone here.

Regarding Messenger, as long are installing the updates for Windows that Microsoft provides, I see no problem having it installed. I have it running on all my machines all the time.
