We are just built differently, Sdgla.
In most endeavors, doctors, ballplayers, small business people, farmers, musicians etc. etc. -- many great people are not primarily motivated by the money. Some have to keep it a secret so they won't be exploited.
I'm not saying they don't desire money to pay the bills and something left over after Dec.31 - but they love what they do and don't seek the max buck. Many would do what they do for free - they are the folks you encounter in the volunteer world.
In fact, I would go so far as to say that I don't always trust men or women who are 100% motivated by the $$. That's a reasoned statement. We even have a word for them which I prefer not to use, because it shames honest, consensual female sex workers.
Obviously there are people who suffer for minimal money; especially laborers and depressed folks - I don't suggest they cannot e great people. I am speaking of those for which their are choices.
Adam Smith was correct about many things but not all, as was Karl Marx, Aristotle, Jesus, Buddha, Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Paine. Obviously none of them have the advantage of data and the historic record we can access, in modern times.
Greed is not good. Money does not measure all value.
