Lee,

While your friend with the money and bypass surgery might have done well with growth stocks, you and he should remember one often overlooked fact: If you had invested in growth stocks in 1929, you would not have broken even until the early 1950s....and that was only if you reinvested dividends and paid the taxes out of other money.

Stocks are definitely the way to go for the long haul, but there is STILL no guarantee that "long term buy and hold investing in stocks" will work either.
