We could ask for a Tory
or
One head, three rumps.

The Canadian voters have very little to say right now. The Liberal Party has a strong mandate and Mr. Chretien is in an unassailable location. The amount of influence that Canada wields in international affairs does not compare to the vast power of our southern ally and neighbour but Canada plays a critical role. As the closest US ally, and a moderate or non-hawkish nation, our opinion on US policy is often reflected by moderates around the world. In the close US/Canada alliance it is not the similarities that are important, but the differences. In the current UN/US/Iraq confrontation Canadians will stand beside the US in any endeavour aimed at peace, freedom and liberty.

As an elder statesman with a powerful mandate Chretien could play a vital role in international affairs, if he chose to do so. Somewhere between a hawk and a dove, maybe a starling. In the past he has done a perfect job of imitating the nuthatch, several occasions come to mind, the pepper spraying and his homeless friend.
