My family farms in Kansas and Colorado. A little different then Chester County, but basically the same. Wyncote Golf Course stands on a large Dairy farm that didn't make it. That type of conversion would be impossible on the Kansas Colorado high plains. Lancaster County makes it because the farms are handed down with no debt and they are operated with no or very little expensive farm machinery.

Kansas farms on the other hand are larger and would be impossible to run without the expensive machinery. The machinery expense rules out making ends meet on small farms out there. I have a cousin that farms over 8,000 acres. If he gets the right rain fall, and sells futures on the crop at a good price he has a great payday. (Don't ask me how he works the futures. I do know he listens to the radio and carries a cell phone in the air conditioned tractor cab. That is where he does most of the trading.) If the weather does cooperate, and the prices are bad he shops for more land. He is like a one man corporation. He has a masters in Agriculture from Perdue. He is the type of farmer that will thrive. A blend of the old and new.
