President asserts his grip by bringing new close colleague as Governor of Punjab. Khalid Maqbool will replace Lt. Gen. (Retd) Mohammad Safdar. Safdar was appointed Governor of the Punjab after the military takeover in 1999 and completed his two years term on Wednesday.
The out-going Punjab Governor had left Lahore on Friday for Islamabad to meet President Pervez Musharraf.
In the reshuffle, Corps Commander of Bahawalpur Lt. Gen. Munir Hafeez has been appointed NAB Chairman.
Commandant of Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) Maj. Gen. Shahid Hameed has been promoted as three-star General and appointed as Corps Commander of Bahawalpur. Lt. Gen. Khalid Maqbool was appointed NAB Chairman last year, replacing Lt. Gen. Syed Mohammad Amjad who in turn was appointed Corps Commander of Multan.
Before his appointment as NAB Chairman, Lt. Gen. Khalid Maqbool was Corps Commander of Lahore. “This might be the reason that he is being appointed Governor of the Punjab,” the sources said.
