Evidently from what I have read it is a matter of the OE folders being over capacity. I have gone back and cleaned them up and done a better job of setting up individual folders for mail I want to keep.

As far as the lost messages, I did find the file folder containing them, but they were corrupted to some degree. I tried on more than one occasion to open it, but typically after a couple of hours only about 5% of the file opened. I finally gave up. Lesson learned - don't let your inbox get too full.
