back in the 70's and 80's they played for the money. The winners got a little more than the losers plus
it was an all expense paid trip to Hawaii. I had a buddy who played 11 years including seven with the
Oilers. He always played just for the trip and the extra cash. Imagine an all-pro linebacker making only $90,000
in this day and age. Probably no way he would do it today. Fortunately he never got hurt.

He always came back to Houston to sell Lincolns for Bud Adams in the off season to augment his
salary. That way he had a car during the off season. During the season, he made the rookies drive
him wherever he needed to go. He also did supermarket openings for pocket cash during the season.

One off season, he cashed a check for $600 after the pro bowl and still had $200 left when he left
for training camp. Said it was his best off season ever. Needless to say, he didn't die broke like so
many players of that era. It wasn't that he was a tightwad, he just understood how people wanted
to take advantage of him. Never saw him complain when we stuck him for beers at the bowling alley.
