ther was only one user account i wasn't aware of, "default user" which only took up 1MB.

you are on the right track as far as folders being in the "everyone's document's and settings" folder and not in the individual "document's and settings".

namely, the "shared document" folder which appears in everyone's document and settings and is 108MB. the folder doesn't appear in the individual user's documents and settings. there are other folders too, but, relatively small. so, the next backup, i'm going to choose the users and folders to backup. thanks for the help!
