Short term outperformance does not guarantee future results in this sector. As the following graph shows, NVLS has outperformed and underperformed AMAT alternatively over the last several years. Overall, however they pretty much have followed each other. Your argument that the recent outperformance of NVLS predicts future outperformance may be right. History, however, has shown that periods of outperformance in one company was followed by outperformance of the other. I guess it is a question of relative strength vs. value.

I excluded LRCX as they have had significantly more difficulty with the previous downturns, making their chart far inferior.
