Akula, I think if parents and grandparents will try to understand that most of these young people are only trying to establish their own identity, and are not necessarily involved in destructive behavior, they wouldn't be so shocked.
My parent's generation had rebellions that involved things far more serious than the rebellions of my generation.
Since I am probably closer in age to your parent's generation, I can tell you that it was pretty wild. Some kids didn't survive,(drug overdoses, etc.)
My kids were angels compared to me at that age. So when they did do some of the things that shock older people, I didn't freak-out about it. And now that they are older, their hair is the natural color and any piercings have closed up, except my daughter still wears earrings.
I think that many parents and grandparents, are genuinely concerned that their children may become involved in destructive behavior, when they see these outward things. I think if parents and kids can try to communicate how they feel, why they're upset, etc., maybe they can come to an understanding, and these things won't be such a problem. |
