You would have to ask Schmidt why he took the job. Maybe he took it so that no one else would take it who might hurt the odds of defeating Trump by getting Shultz to run or getting him to take down other D candidates. Maybe he took it precisely in order to eventually talk Shultz out of running. Maybe he took it in order to see if Shultz would in fact be a viable candidate and when he decided that he wouldn't, he talked him out of running. All of that is speculation. We don't know why. We do know that Shultz is not running and didn't do anything to harm any Democratic candidates.
