Why would I want to enroll in Medicare?

I assume you're talking about Part B given that Part A is free.

I'm a retired fed, too. Faced that decision last year. I ended up taking Part B primarily because I hate to be bothered with bills. When you have Part A, Part B, and, in my case, Blue Cross, you don't pay a dime out of pocket. What Medicare doesn't pay, Blue Cross does. But there's no way I'm getting my money's worth out of the Medicare. I pay more in premiums than I would have had to pay in cash had I not taken Part B. I knew that going in and decided to put a premium on convenience.

Before you decide, you might want to check to see just what it will cost you. Part B is means tested. I have to pay the premium. You might, too.
