I will go out on a limb and submit that SI would never would have become SI, had it not been for offering it free so many moons ago. The free bulletin board model, open to all, is what killed Compuserve's pay model. With freedom comes some risk. Policing the threads effectively is what Yahoo and so many other boards have failed to do effectively.

The reasons for charging have now passed. It's obvious Go2net recognizes the value of advertising. Otherwise, I doubt they would have redisigned the site so dramatically. The new SI has been tailored made for advertising banners.

I say, let's not be afraid of the voices of the world. Let's welcome them and grow the community of SI another twenty fold in the next few years!

150.00 bucks may not seem like much to you or I who have benifited so tremendously from the Amrerican bull market. But I'll bet it's a lot of money to a Ukrainian scientist who has just plugged into the net. Or to a Chinese student who is sure to come onboard in the coming few years.

I for one, believe we would benefit far more by opening our doors to the voices of the world.

Perhaps I am just an optimist, because I don't see the world as being full of vermin.
