The 'solution' is in the body of the text ..

One alternative would be to recycle spent fuel rods, extracting radioactive material for reuse and reducing the amount of waste that would need to be stored. But the idea has long been blocked by fears that plutonium removed from old rods could fall into the hands of terrorists or rogue countries trying to build nuclear weapons.

You 'recycle' the 'spent fuel' thru a breeder reactor ..

If plutonium in spent rods is so 'attractive' to terrorists
how come they haven't successfully targeted shipments
of new fuel when reactors are re-fueled ???? Hell, if its
such a security risk why do we announce in the MSM when a
nuke plant enters and ends it's refueling cycle ...

Complete and utter BS ... Build a couple of breeders ..
storage problem solved ..

If you don't believe me, just check the
YAHOO news headlines for any publicly traded
utility that operates nukes .. EXC/DUK/SO/FPL ..

Triff ..
