My Dad asked me to be on the lookout for a usable laptop upgrade, as his Windows XP netbook has been getting long in the tooth. Some decent HP laptops came available for free (Core i3 now with 3GB RAM, securely wiped although missing a power adaptor) and I have decided to install Linux Mint Cinnamon Edition on a laptop for my Dad. The laptop checks out as being fairly compatible with Linux at least a couple of years ago so I am not expecting any issues.

I tried an earlier version of Ubuntu Unity a few years ago and did not like it even though I have been an Ubuntu user for at least 6 years now. So I steered towards Linux Mint. After watching a few videos, the Cinnamon vs. MATE desktops were fairly comparable, and I decided on Cinnamon (can't remember specifically why). So while I wait for the laptop power adaptor to arrive, the DVD media is ready to install. I think Dad is getting kind of excited also.
