I had a similar problem about two weeks ago with XP Pro. It showed 3 unread messages when the log on screen came up (Outlook Ex). I never could find the messages. It went away by itself and hasn't come back. I have no idea what the cause and cure was. No virus...no trojans..no spyware..detected.
