Disk drive index hits 5-month high

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) - Disk drive stocks ignited strong gains Thursday as the main Amex index inched closer to its 52-week high.



The Amex Disk Drive Index (DDX: news, msgs) advanced 10.66 to 120.58, a 9.7 percent rise. The index is at a 5-month high.

Maxtor Corp. (MXTR: news, msgs) led the pack, rising 12 percent, or 81 cents to $7.84.

Read-Rite (RDRT: news, msgs) shares rose 8 percent, or 66 cents to $9.03. The maker of magnetic recording heads for disk drives announced last week that its four major customers have accepted its giant magnetoresistive recording heads for shipment.

Quantum's Hard Disk Drive Group (HDD: news, msgs) gained 56 cents to $9.75, extending its 6 percent rise Wednesday.
