12/19/14 Contest update
Calling All Biotechies!!! Assuming folks want to have another Charity Stock Picking Contest in 2015, I’ve set up the SI board: “2015 Biotech Charity Contest”
The 2015 Contest Guidelines are essentially the same as they were for 2014. Given the calendar, I thought it made sense to have the submission deadline be Sunday, 1/4/2015, Midnight, PST. And I will use the Wednesday, 12/31/2014 market close (or the equivalent for foreign stocks) to set initial portfolio stock prices. For this year’s Contest, no one took advantage of the gap between 12/31 and the later Contest submission deadline. I expect Contestants will also behave honorably for the 2015 Contest. ;~)
So Biotechies, you’re all invited to post your 2015 portfolio stock picks at the SI board: “2015 Biotech Charity Contest” Here’s the link: Subject 59557
The earlier portfolios are posted, the easier it is for me to set up the Contest spreadsheets. Please help me publicize the 2015 Contest. It would be great to beat the 2014 record of 46 contestants!
And now for the update...
On Wednesday, the Fed said they’d be “patient” in raising interest rates. For whatever reason, this made investors very impatient to raise stock prices. It’s no surprise, therefore, that at Friday’s close the Contest median was up 17.41% YTD (vs. up 13.09% YTD a week ago) and the larger-cap Nasdaq Biotech Index, was up 39.85% YTD (vs. up 35.16% YTD a week ago), while the Nasdaq Composite Index closed up 14.10% YTD (vs. up 11.42% YTD a week ago). DEWDIL’s portfolio, up 132.42% YTD, held on to first place and with just two weeks to go will be tough to catch. DOUGH’s portfolio, up 109.45% YTD, and DIEGO’s portfolio, up 106.77% YTD, remained in second place and third place. At Friday's close, 33 of the 46 Contest portfolios were in the black, while 17 of the 46 were beating the NBI. The median Contest portfolio stock (XLRN) is down -1.39% YTD. Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks ranked by % Gained and % Lost for the week. (Prices not converted to US$ in these Tables.) Portfolio adjustments: I have been using TR.TO to track Trillium (it was also trading as SCTPF). As of 12/19, Trillium began trading on NASDAQ as TRIL and unless TRIL volume is minuscule I’ll switch from TR.TO to TRIL by next week’s update. (All corrections, especially adjustments for splits, greatly appreciated.) Enjoy a safe & fun weekend biotechies! Peace & good health, Bulba
