Lizzie, I would suggest it has to do with far more people living under a paradigm of "determinism". It seems like nearly everyone is a "victim" these days. Being responsible and accountable for your actions and inactions has become passe'.

The government is looked upon by people who live under this paradigm as the leveler or fixer of all social and economic problems. If we focused more in schools on how to access the wealth this country is generating, we may see more improvements. But it starts with the schools! Which are completely dominated by the thought process of an intellectual elite, more concerned with keeping their power, than in helping kids *learn*.

The courts have also played a large role in encouraging this way of thinking. "I'm sick from smoking", so it's the company that produces the products fault and not my own. (as if you had NO clue smoking was bad for you). "I broke the law and robbed or killed because of my horrific upbringing, it's not my fault I'm a *victim*.

This deterministic way of thinking has led to all kinds of social and economic problems. We live in the most economically advanced nation on earth, with the greatest opportunities for financial freedom the world has ever seen. Yet we are full of a bunch of *victims*.

"It's all just part of a vast right wing conspiracy I guess. Even the First lady and President are a *victim*!
