Qualcomm's Upbeat Signal For Global Wireless Demand

Standard & Poor's Equity Research reiterated a "strong buy" rating on Qualcomm (nasdaq: QCOM - news - people ) after the wireless-technology company raised guidance. Qualcomm lifted the expected earnings-per-share range for the fiscal second quarter by one cent to 26 cents to 28 cents, citing stronger demand for CDMA chipsets. S&P Equity Research's estimate for the quarter is 28 cents. Qualcomm is expecting phone chip shipments of 36 million to 37 million units, a 1 million-unit increase from its prior forecast; the research firm expects 37 million units. "With most telecom equipment suppliers cautious for the current quarter, we see Qualcomm's raised guidance as a positive sign for global demand for wireless handsets, especially from 3G-based CDMA networks."
