Earnings estimates raised by H&Q and Robertson Stephens. FY 98 estimates are now $3.26 and $3.87 respectively:

-- In a statement, Richard said he raised his third quarter
fiscal 1997 estimate to $0.67/shr from a previous $0.62. He
raised his fiscal 1997 estimate to $2.46/shr from $2.15 and
fiscal 1998 to $3.26/shr from $3.10.

-- Richard raised his fiscal 1997 revenue estimate to $3.85
bln from $3.67 bln. He maintained a fiscal 1998 revenue
estimate of $4.75 bln, as well as a buy rating on the stock.

-- Robertson Stephens & Co said its analyst Sue Billat
raised her fiscal 1997 and fiscal 1998 estimates for
semiconductor equipment maker Applied Materials Inc following
that company's second quarter earnings report late Tuesday.
-- In a statement Billat said she raised her 1997 earnings
forecast to $2.48 a share from $2.20 and 1998 to $3.87 from
$3.25.

-- Billat said she believes the company "has turned the
corner" on chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) equipment
used for making microchips. She said she believes Applied
Materials has solved earlier design issues and is seeing
"strategically significant repeat orders."
