We're trying to talk the girls into third grade. You're right, in 1st you're trying to both babysit and teach. Not only teach content, but teach them what it means to learn. Especially in our school, where they can come into first grade not knowing their alphabet, not even knowing their colors. We've been pushing for years to set some minimum standard to move from K to 1st, such as at least knowing the alphabet and being able to count at least to 50 and preferably 100.

Third grade is supposed to be perfect, from what we hear -- old enough to do things, but young enough not to be rebellious yet.

As for me, nothing would induce me to teach anything under 10th grade, and my happiest teaching has been college and graduate levels.
