Acer Chip Making Unit Sees Turnaround
TAIPEI (Reuters) - Acer Semiconductor Manufacturing Inc, a loss-making subsidiary of Taiwan's Acer computer group, said on Tuesday it expected to make a T$1.0 billion ($30.97 million) profit for 1999, citing an industry recovery.

''This year will be the turnaround year for Acer Semiconductor after two consecutive years of losses,'' the firm said in a statement.

Acer Semiconductor, which makes dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips, has said it posted a loss of over T$5 billion for 1998, reflecting a worldwide DRAM price slump. ($1-32.29 Taiwan Dollar)

''The DRAM market has started to show signs of recovery this year,'' it said. Chaired by Acer group's chief executive officer Stan Shih, Acer Semiconductor has said it was keen to diversify out of DRAM manufacturing and into logic integrated circuits and made-to-order ''foundry'' chip making. Sharp price falls of DRAMs worldwide had led to huge losses for all DRAM makers in Taiwan and many of them were switching to the more lucrative foundry chip making.

Acer Semiconductor, formerly a joint venture with Texas Instruments Corp called TI-Acer, was no exception. Acer bought out TI's stake in June 1998.
