There is a triumvirate of the ... politicians, the gangsters and real-estate/construction capitalists.

Now, I must ask you,,, is this any different than any other country in the world?

I find your views of the japanese educational system interesting. The same can be said of American high school graduates.

A long time ago(probably more than 10 years--meaning the data was probably 15 years old.), I recall reading something that suggested that by and large no matter how much you "teach" your kids, by age 20 ish they're all about the same on a world wide scale, and that even though the US was behind in educating our kids we wind up catching up in graduate school and the work force. How much of that was due to the brain drain, I don't know.

Whereas I am aware of some of the old guard issues with education in Japan, the top institutions are absolutely first class, and I wouldn't discount it. However, certainly the breadth of education and R&D in the US is king.

Chinese inventiveness I tend to think is as much a product of ripping off the rest of the world as Japan used to do. When they become leaders in science, they won't seem as inventive. :-)
