I found my heavily highlighted copies of "Reveille for Radicals" and "Rules for Radicals" nestled between Bill Veeck's "Veeck as in Wreck" and Abbie Hoffman's "Steal This Book." I should probably move him over with the John Steinbeck and Nelson Algren books.

Alinsky had quite a following in Chicago when I went to UICC (a/k/a Harvard on Halsted) in the late 60's. A homie. I cannot recall the last time that I saw a reference to him in the local papers. Some of the organizations that he founded, including The Back of the Yards Council, are still around.

Alinsky was quite a man. The year 2009 will mark the 100th anniversary of his birth. Time for someone to start working on a book and a movie.

I recall having some favorite stories about Alinsky but find that these sort of memories are harder to dredge up as I venture more deeply into my mid-50's. I should have been taking better notes over the last 40 years.
