Extended Warranties… As always, It depends… My $0.02.

Usually/Often? These extended warranties are provided through a third party (“insurance-type company”), not the manufacturer or the retailer. That’s not to say that the retailer (and the sales person via commission) and possibly the manufacturer don’t get a percentage of the sale of the extended warranty.
My perception is that insurance-type companies are in business to make money, not necessarily to provide support to a consumer who happens to purchase a less than stellar product. They have Actuarial people who understand these numbers.

It’s a gamble!
Bet on what you are comfortable with, but do your homework first.

Pure electronic stuff will sometimes fail right out of the box, or very early in its usage, (covered by the manufacturer’s warranty) but more likely will fail much, much later. [MTBF… Mean Time Before Failure] The same goes for mechanical stuff. Combine the two in the same product, and overall reliability decreases.

A Camcorder likely is the most complex object in a household.

Homework: Determine what is covered and what is not. Also check whether there are limitations on hours of use (on certain components) that may circumvent the extended warranty’s overall term.
