Have a relative fell in love with Cary and moving there this summer from NY area. Cashed out the RE and retired at 40. I too was impressed with the area on a recent trip. Downtown Raleigh really needs to go through its renaissance however.. Like you say the area is exploding. Open land and easy freeway access in all directions. It will be interesting to see how the area grows and fills out.. It has about the highest educated population you'll find outside of the burbs of Boston, SF and NYC which combined with the natural beauty, mild climate and inexpensive RE makes it a rare find these days.
