The thing that amazed me was the sound. There's nothing that can prepare you for it...... Standing at the safe shot line as an A-6 comes to full military power for a launch..... I always wore double hearing protection, yet it never seemed to do much good as the sound is travelling through your body. Used to make the tops of my feet itch.... To this day it surprises me that I have never seen references to the sheer animal power of a carrier launching or retrieving a jet fighter. I hear that! They tried to capture that in the IMAX theater at Disneyland and they did a pretty good job for those who've experienced it....... but alas, nothing like the real thing.
